June 2024: Gifts Of Prometheus

This block is made using FPP: foundation paper piecing. The templates serve as outlines for your block, and the lines between fabrics are the stitching lines. This supports the block as it’s sewn, and creates shapes that are difficult or impossible to make with traditional techniques!

Our design at right is a LABYRINTH, central to the myths from Crete of the Minotaur. This repeating design is constructed of four identical 9” finished blocks, and makes a large panel for our quilt!

NEW TO FPP?  We have resources for you!  Try the sample designs included in the printed pattern first, and refer back to the How To Quilt video series included in your membership for guidance!

If you would prefer not to use FPP, there is an ALTERNATE design made using applique to create the same shapes. The design is the same, but construction and fabric requirements are different. Download the alternate block pattern as a separate file below.

BONUS designs!
There are four ADDITIONAL designs available for your quilt! These can be used IN PLACE OF the labyrinth block that follows, or can be made IN ADDITION TO the labyrinth block.  It's our joy to continue to surprise you with extras and treats as our year together goes along!

The olive and temple blocks are suitable for all levels, including beginner.  The owl and vase blocks, because they contain more small pieces, are considered intermediate to advanced in challenge level.  There are no applique versions of these patterns available although the vase block does include an applique element for the central design.

Your quilt layout requires FOUR 9” blocks, which can be any combination of the designs shown. Find the files for the bonus designs, shown above, for download using the buttons below.

In this month's chapter, Kitty uncovers the gold artifact, and begins to put the pieces together.  But does she have all the facts?  Find out when you download the file below!

    1. Oh my! I just noticed that, I’m going to blame autocorrect. The files are correct for JUNE! Thanks for noticing that error!

  1. Are there more detailed instructions for the alternate block….I may be thick headed, but what is written is not very clear to me. NOT wanting to do FPP at this time.

    1. I was a little unsure as well. If we choose to do the assorted colors, what is the order in which they will be placed. The fpp is still a little confusing to me at times.

      1. I printed out the coloring page and colored in my choices. Scroll down past the original black, and you can get an idea of what colors to use on the pages about the alternate blocks. It’s one of those things that once you see it, you see the pattern. I marked out the white bands first, then colored in the bands as I liked.

        1. Hooray! I’m so glad the coloring pages work for you! That’s exactly how I use them. I’ve also seen people go through the templates and write in the new color name, so they don’t forget on the fly.

  2. Oh wow, this is a real bonanza! So hard to decide! But I’ve settled on the labyrinth, with a yellow center for the sun, and bands of green for the agriculture and 2 blues for the sea. And I hope to do the 4 symbols later! Thanks, Deborah!

  3. I really like this block and so hard which combination to make. Also like the alternative blocks.

  4. Hello. As far as the using the coloring page for the blocks, I like to use the Snipping tool (should be available on most computers, but not sure about Apple) to copy the coloring page. I then paste the image in a Word document and save the file. Then I open the Word document in Paint so I can play with the different colors until I get what I like. 🙂
You can paste the image several times in one doc file and play with different color options.
    🙂

    1. Ooooh, I’m so glad! I wanted to make sure everyone had the easiest time to get just the files they need.

  5. I’m working on the alternate color combo (p. 3 – the two tone green). The fabric notations on the G1 – G4 sections seems, to me, to have G2 and G4 fabrics reversed from the color image shown. Since I’ve already sewn sections G1 – G3 (and do not wish to tear out these seams) I will press ahead. Please correct me if I’m wrong. Otherwise, you may want to alert others about this.

I appreciate the variety of alternative color schemes.
